Peter, 60, loved his job as a bus driver. He had been one almost all his life, loving the company of the little children who rode his bus daily. It made him feel younger and more energetic. His record was clean, without one accident or mishap (小事故) during his tenure (任期), which made him a trustworthy driver.
However, Mr. Clark, Peter’s boss, was concerned and thought that it was time for him to retire. “You don’t have a choice here, Peter,” he said seriously. “We don’t want to invite any risk to the children who take your bus every day. We need a replacement at this stage.”
“But I have a perfect record,” argued Peter. “You know, for an elderly man like me, my job is the only thing that keeps me alive. I want to keep my job. ”
“Would you take responsibility if something bad happened to those children ” Mr. Clark said.
Peter thought it over, and very reluctantly, he gave in to Mr. Clark’s request. Peter decided to retire a week later.
His retirement day approached pretty soon. The day before his last day, Peter was dropping off the kids at his first stop when he looked out of the window and saw a lady on the road who had fainted (昏厥). He asked the kids not to leave the bus and got down to help the woman.
Just when he finished, he heard screams behind him. The children were looking out of the window and screaming, “Fire! Fire! Help!” “How could that have happened ” Peter was shaking in fear. With trembling hands, Peter dialed 911 and rushed to help the children. Peter covered himself with his jacket and burst into the flaming bus. He took the children out of the burning bus one by one. Thankfully, the firefighters arrived soon and helped Peter, saving all students.
The next day, Peter saw the entire school gathered in front of his home. When Peter approached them, Mr. Clark started clapping and everyone joined him. “You are a hero, Peter! You saved the lives of those young children,” he said. “You are the best driver. We hope you can keep the job!”

Sending a package back is not easy. Repacking, printing labels and shipping it back up to the seller is an increasingly familiar experience for online shoppers. In America 21%of online orders, worth some $218bn, were returned in 2021, according to the National Retail Federation, up from 18%in 2020. For clothing and shoes it can reach around 40%.
The problem has its roots in the birth of e-commerce. To compete with bricks-and-mortar (实体的) sellers and make consumers comfortable with ordering online, e-commerce firms offered free returns. Consumers came to expect it.
Each step of the process is costly. Retailers have to pay for goods to be picked up or posted. Processing returns is labor-intensive (劳动密集型), explains Zac Rogers who worked as a returns manager at Amazon. A return must be opened and someone has to decide what to do with it. “A worker in an Amazon warehouse can pick 30 items in a minute, but a return can take ten minutes to process, ” says Mr. Rogers.
Once processed, only 5% of the returned goods can be resold immediately by retailers. Most go to liquidators at the lowest prices or are thrown away.
One solution involves adding friction (阻力). Last year, a Japanese fashion brand became one of the first retailers to charge a small fee for posted returns. Other firms are selling more refurbished (翻新的) goods as a way to cut losses.
Startups are getting in on the action. Using artificial intelligence to help retailers decide what to do with the returned goods is the brainchild of them. Happy Returns, another startup, helps with logistics (物流). It has 5, 000 drop-off points for returns across America, mostly in chain stores. The returns are collected and sent back to retailers all at once, saving up to 40% of postage costs.
Some are experimenting with virtual reality (VR). Over half of the items are returned because they are the wrong size. In June Walmart said it would buy Memomi, an augmented-reality (AR) startup that lets shoppers virtually try on glasses in real-time for a seamless, easy and fun omnichannel experience. Walmart also offers ways to try on clothes and arrange furniture in rooms using AR.
8. Why did e-commerce firms offer free returns at first
A. To cut costs. B. To develop logistics service.
C. To compete with physical stores. D. To show the advantage of shopping online.
9. Which of the following best describes the processing of returns
A. Efficient. B. Automatic
C. Expensive. D. Time-consuming.
10 How did the Japanese company tackle the return problem
A. By charging a fee. B. By raising the price of goods.
C. By selling more returned goods. D. By using advanced technologies.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Walmart has pioneered the use of AR.
B. Technology plays a role in reducing returns.
C. VR and AR will be used in more industries.
D. Cooperation among companies is important.

Huang Danian, the well-known Chinese geophysicist, was born in 1958 in Guangxi, China. As a keen and able student, Huang went to the UK in 1993 to further his studies.
By the time Huang moved back to China in 2009, he had been living and working in the UK for many years. He had a good job and a life there, but he gave it all up to return to home driven by the idea that he needed to contribute to his country. As one of the world’s leading experts in deep-Earth exploration technology, Huang was invited to participate in the “Thousand Talent” programme. He took up a position at Jilin University, Changchun.
Huang was named lead scientist of a branch of China’s largest deep-Earth exploration programme, developing advanced cameras that can see through the Earth’s crust (地壳) so that it can be analysed without having to dig into it. He set up an advanced lab, sometimes paying for equipment with his own money. Some described him as a “lunatic”, but this passion and drive enabled Huang to push forwards China’s deep-Earth exploration technology into a world-leading position. Huang’s devotion contributed to China’s lunar probe (月球探测器) Chang’e 3 being landed on the moon in 2013 and the launch of the spacecraft Shenzhou-11 and Tiangong-2 in 2016.
Huang’s health also paid the price for his commitment to his work. He began having fits (昏厥) in 2012, but paid little attention to them, stating he did not have time to go to see a doctor—his work always came first. In November 2016, Huang fainted and was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with cancer. The disease was so advanced that he had just a couple of months to live.
Huang never gave up, and always tried to push forwards. Even from his hospital bed, he continued his work, writing references for his colleagues and replying to questions from his students. Huang died in January 2017, aged just 58. More than 800 people attended his funeral to celebrate a life that burned so bright, but was so short.
12. Huang returned to China in 2009 because ________.

细节理解题。根据第二段中“However, Mr. Clark, Peter’s boss, was concerned and thought that it was time for him to retire.(然而,彼得的老板克拉克先生很担心,认为他是时候退休了)”可知,Mr. Clark认为彼得到了退休的年龄了。由此可知,他担心彼得太老了,当不了校车司机。故选C。

I want to keep my job.”(“但是我有一个完美的记录,”彼得争辩道。“你知道,对于像我这样的老人来说,我的工作是唯一能让我活下去的东西。我想保住我的工作。”)”和划线单词下文“he gave in to Mr. Clark’s request. C
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. A 11. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了解决网购退货的两种方法。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段一二句“The problem has its roots in the birth of e-commerce. To compete with bricks-and-mortar (实体的) sellers and make consumers comfortable with ordering online, e-commerce firms offered free returns. ”(这个问题的根源在于电子商务的诞生。为了与实体卖家竞争,并让消费者在网上下单时感到舒适,电子商务公司提供免费退货服务。)可知,电商刚开始实行免费退货是为了和实体店竞争。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。第三段第一句提到“Each step of the process is costly.”(这个过程的每一步都是昂贵的。)且该段提到“Processing returns is labor-intensive (劳动密集型), explains Zac Rogers who worked as a returns manager at Amazon. A return must be opened and someone has to decide what to do with it.”(曾在亚马逊担任退货经理的扎克·罗杰斯解释说,退货处理是劳动密集型的。回执必须被打开,必须有人决定如何处理它。)处理退货的工人还需要十分钟才能解决一个退货申请,因此推断退货的过程是耗时又耗钱的,是昂贵的。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。第五段第二句提到“Last year, a Japanese fashion brand became one of the first retailers to charge a small fee for posted returns.”(去年,一家日本时装品牌成为首批对退货收取少量费用的零售商之一。)由此判断,这家日本公司通过抽取一定费用处理退货问题。故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。最后一段第一句提到的“Some are experimenting with virtual reality (VR).”(一些公司正在尝试虚拟现实(VR)。)和“In June Walmart said it would buy Memomi, an augmented-reality (AR) startup that lets shoppers virtually try on glasses in real-time for a seamless, easy and fun omnichannel experience. Walmart also offers ways to try on clothes and arrange furniture in rooms using AR.(今年6月,沃尔玛表示将收购增强现实(AR)初创公司Memomi,该公司可以让购物者实时虚拟尝试眼镜,获得无缝、轻松、有趣的全渠道体验。沃尔玛还提供了使用AR在房间里试穿衣服和安排家具的方法。)”可知,该段以沃尔玛为例,提到该公司可以让购物者尝试虚拟现实眼镜来试穿衣服或者安排家具装饰,这样虚拟现实就能够帮助减少因尺寸不合适等原因而带来的退货,说明科技的发展在电商退货环节起着非常重要的作用。故选B。
D

Defining what an ideal friend is like is not an easy task. ____16____ However, generally speaking, there are certain qualities that most people would consider as characteristics of an ideal friend.
The ideal friend knows how to show weakness. The ideal friends don’t try to prove how successful they are. ____17____ They show how much they trust us by admitting failings and sorrows. They offer us the gift of their vulnerability (脆弱).
____18____ More often than it’s comfortable to admit, we don’t quite know what we think until a proper friend gently asks us to expand on a thought, to explain why we’re impressed by it and to find good answers to possible objections. They see the potential in what we’re saying when we can’t.
The proper friend helps build our self-understanding. There are so many things we don’t entirely comprehend about who we are. We find it hard to pin down our goals. ____19____ We might have some strong opinions, but it can be difficult to explain really why these ideas matter to us. The right friend listens and helps us piece together the best account of our fears and excitements.
They help us to like ourselves. Normally we’re intently alive to our own shortcomings; it’s more obvious, from our point of view, what’s disappointing about us than what’s attractive. We need a friend because we’re likely to be so very unfriendly towards ourselves. ____20____
A. A true friend helps us think.
B. We get defensive and we don’t really know why.
C. Loyalty is a common quality given to ideal friends.
D. The good friend likes us in ways we’re not easily able to.
