Getting to Antarctica is not easy. The few who are lucky enough to visit this most mysterious continent do so by ship. To reach Antarctica, ships must pass through an extremely violent area of ocean called the Drake Passage, considered to be the roughest stretch of sea on the planet.
Walls of water thirty, sometimes forty feet high continually crashed against our ship for two solid days. We would hold on to a rope inside the ship while being violently tipped (倾斜) to one extreme side, then to the other, and then back again. My daughter Claire and I were as mentally prepared as we could be.
About two and a half days after entering the Drake Passage, the waters calmed. Soon, we noticed small black spots on nearby pieces of floating ice. Emperor penguins (企鹅)! Then, we began the two-mile hike over the ice to the penguin colony. Within several hundred yards, small groups of emperors, perhaps ten or so at a time, greeted us, sliding on their bellies and making their wonderful noises, sort of a long, high-pitched sound.
One day two adult emperors with their three chicks following them approached Claire, who was resting on the ice. They left the chicks with her, as if she were the babysitter. Twenty minutes later they returned to collect the chicks. And I will never forget the penguin that, when I jokingly asked which way back to the helicopters, pointed a wing in the correct direction. Every night aboard our safe and warm ship, we thought about what it takes to survive in Antarctica, an incredibly harsh (恶劣的) place.
But each day on the ice, we also thought about the Drake Passage, the impact of the large body of water we had to endure to get where we were. Over the course of our visit, we came to respect the power of that sea. We still talk about the penguins, as I’m sure we always will. But we talk about the Drake Passage, too. Both experiences were unforgettable, and one would not have been possible without the other.

D. Claire led the young penguins to where the adult penguins stayed.
27. What does the underlined word “endure” in the last paragraph mean

Experts analyzed how language can affect children’s lives and the role it plays in everyday life. They also determined which languages tend to lead to the best career opportunities as an adult. “We believe that language learning is hugely beneficial for children’s development and it is a real investment for the future,” said Antonella Sorace, professor of developmental linguistics (语言学) at Edinburgh University. The study involved a survey of 2,001 parents with children under the age of 18, as well as another survey of more than 500 business leaders.
So which languages took the top spot Results indicated that children should be learning French, German, and/or Chinese if they want to be successful within the next ten years. Mastering a second language opens the door to new markets for businesses and allows them to create new relationships with potential partners. Besides being able to speak another language, the academic and interpersonal skills that can be acquired from learning a new language are important as well. “Children who are exposed to different languages become more aware of different cultures, other people, and other points of view. They also tend to be better than monolinguals (只用单语的人) at multitasking and’are often more advanced readers,” said Sorace.
A vast majority of parents surveyed in this study (85 percent) believe it is important for their children to learn a second language, and about one in four believe it will increase their child’s career opportunities and improve their chance of being employed. The future employment markets are in need of space tour guides, robot coaches, front-line e-commerce workers, nurses etc. No matter what a child choose to be, multilinguals and cross-culture talents will probably have a good chance to take the lead. However, 45 percent of parents surveyed admit that their child or children cannot speak a second language.
If you want your child to stand out from the crowd, follow the habits of parents of successful people—give children chores, set high but realistic expectations, get yourself educated, make time for bonding, accept and recognize their feelings—and, of course, make sure they learn one of the three success languages!
28. Who might be a person that took part in the survey
A. A young technician with no child.
B. A farmer with a 19-year-old child.
C. A librarian with a 16-year-old child.
D. A middle-aged reporter with no child.
29. What are the benefits of people’s mastering a second language
① Developing one’s strong will.
② Improving the ability to observe things.
③ Acquiring academic and interpersonal skills.
④ Having access to new markets for businesses.
⑤ Forming new relationships with potential partners.
A. ①③⑤ B. ③④⑤ C. ①②④ D. ②③④
30. How many parents surveyed believe learning a second language will increase their child’s career opportunities
A. About 500. B. About 600. C. About 700. D. About 800.
31. What is the aim of the last paragraph

On Saturday, Britain will witness its first coronation (加冕礼) in 70 years, as Charles III is crowned king in a Christian ceremony that is carefully prepared and organized, which has more than a thousand years of history. The coronation, which is the religious confirmation of his accession (就职) after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, last September, is the first of a British king since 1937.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the event “a moment of enormous national pride” and “a show of our country’s character.”
However, not everyone is in a celebratory mood. Republican opponents who want an elected head of state plan to protest on the day with signs declaring “not my king.” Anti-monarchist (反君主制者)activist group Republic plans to hold a demonstration a short walk from where the king is due to be crowned, though they received letters from the Home Office warning them about new powers handed to police to deal with public demonstrations.
“Republic will not give in, and we will be protesting on Trafalgar Square and along the route of the coronation procession on Saturday,” the group’s chief executive, Graham Smith, told The Guardian.
The annual British Attitudes Survey also uncovered a change in attitudes towards the royals. Of the respondents, 29 percent said the monarchy was “very important,” 26 percent thought it was “quite important,” 20 percent said it was “not very important,” and 25 percent said it was “not at all important.” The number of people who said that the monarchy is “very important” has never been lower since data collection began in 1983. There was also a clear difference in attitudes between older and younger generations. Just 12 percent of 18-to 34-year-olds view the monarchy as “very important,” compared to 42 percent of the 55+ age group.
Australia, Belize, and Jamaica are already indicating moves towards becoming republics while Charles is also facing calls to apologize for his ancestors’involvement in colonialism (殖民主义) and the slave trade.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was not satisfied with and even angry with my father in the first year of college, because he didn’t care about my feelings at all.
One day I had a serious quarrel with him. I was fed up with his direction and correction. How could he interfere with my life and my study plans How could he understand the importance of my university activities The only thing that he cared about was my academic performance! He didn’t understand my world and I didn’t understand his, either.
I stormed out and sighed all the way to school. Suddenly I realized that I didn’t have the assignment that was due (应交出的): a thought card. This class was taught by Mrs Smith. The thought card was the admission ticket to her Tuesday class. She would return them to us with her comment.
My first thought card read, “All that glitters (发光)is not gold.” She commented, “What does this quote mean to you Is it significant ” Obviously, she was taking it seriously. I surely didn’t want to reveal myself to her.
The week progressed. Mrs Smith’s class was quite brilliant. She challenged us to think and come up with our own responses. But I had no handling strategies to deal with it.
The second Tuesday came. I wrote on my card, “The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.” The next day the card came back, “You seem to need a listener. Is this important to your life ” I couldn’t remember a teacher caring personally about me since primary school.
With all these memories filling my mind, I raced to class. Just outside the door, I took a card and wrote, “I have the most terrible dad of the world!” Then I dashed in. Looking up at me, Mrs Smith reached out for the card, and I took my seat. The moment I sat down, I felt terrible. I didn’t mean to let that out.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

My teacher always helps us with worksheets. In addition, Ms Wells is a kind person. Not only is she kind to kids, but she’s also kind to other teachers and parents. She is always thoughtful and considerate. Lastly, Ms Wells devotes her time to kids. She devotes her lunchtime to Student Council, which meets in her room. Last fall, Ms Wells promised me that she would come to one of my soccer games. Guess what She did, even though she had a lot of school stuff to do and had to leave for Chicago. In conclusion, I think Ms Wells should be the winner of the contest. I know you will agree with me that Ms Wells is a teacher who made a difference. She’s the best!
Sincerely,
Melissa

That night I had difficulty sleeping, for I was afraid that she might reveal (透露) that to my father. On Wednesday morning I came to class with mixed feelings. At first, Mrs Smith did not return the card to me. I sat in my usual seat, opening the book with worry and fear. I thought that Mrs Smith must have told my father about this. What was waiting for me was another more severe argument. After all the classes were over in the afternoon, it was Mrs Smith who called my name, as I was walking to the door of the classroom. Then she told me that she would be my listener and exchanged the card with the words, “Good medicine is bitter, and good advice is hard to hear”.
“I will bear your words in mind,” I said, saying goodbye to Mrs Smith and heading for my home. I was wondering whether I should tell my father what had happened these days. I found my father waiting for me at the school gate with the gift I had always wanted. That day, I walked home with my father. The setting sun shone on us, casting our shadows on the road. Cars of various colors passed by us, but they did not affect our conversation. We talked a lot that day, and it seemed that the journey from school to home had also been shortened. And eventually I understood my father’s deep love and thoughtful care for me.
