It’s a windy day in Laguna San Ignacio, and the waves seem to come from all directions. My children and I are riding on a 18-foot boat — small enough that we can reach down into the water if a gray whale swims up alongside. And then we see what we’ve come for: a heart-shaped shower of water and a dark mass rushing below it. As instructed, we splash (溅泼) the water to signal the huge whale, which turns out a mother with her baby. The baby soon swims beneath our boat, appears to blow mist in my face, then lies onto its side like a 2-ton puppy. Leaning down, I touched its skin gently. It feels electric. Also, a bit like petting a hard-boiled egg.
San Ignacio is one of very few places where a person can pet a whale. The whales come each year to give birth and to mate. If you’re lucky, you can shake hands with a leatheryfin (鳍) or even plant a kiss on a cold, salty cheek. I usually worry about such interactions, because wild creatures can become deeply stressed by human contact. But boat numbers are strictly limited. And any whale that approaches a boat does so on its own terms. Like that baby whale, we see him a few times, and he seems to like being petted and splashed.”
So we are two species, connecting through touch, but also through eye contact. Whalers used to call gray whales “devil fish” because these attractive creatures turn violent when threatened. That makes it feel even more of a blessing when, on our third day there, a large mama whale approaches the boat. I’m splashing when I feel her nose press up into my hand. Though she’s wiser and apparently more alert than her child, she still decides to trust us.
Which of the following statements is true?
A. The writer was on a whale-touching trip.
B. The writer’s boat went down with a huge wave.
C. The baby whale splashed water all over the writer.
D. The mother whale’s skin felt as hard as a boiled egg.
What does the phrase “does so on its own terms” in Paragraph 2 mean?
is mad with too many visitors.
is ready for hands-on attention.
is restricted in swimming routes.
is enclosed in their safety zones.
From what do Gray whales get the name of “devil fish”?
A. strange appearance
B. inborn violence
C. fierceness in danger
D. surprisingly enormous size
What’ s the writer’s implied purpose in the passage?
A. To popularize the knowledge of whales.
B. To share an experience of the sea voyage.
C. To show admiration for whales’ motherhood.
D. To advocate harmony between man and nature.

The Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) fire has been put out, but its roof has been largely damaged. The terrible accident causes a sudden sharp pain to people around the world. What a pity that we can’t see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore.
But the good news is that there is at least one way of seeing them, namely via a video game called Assassin’s Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre Dame as it was before. In addition, with VR technology, one can even look around the undamaged Notre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital technology could help better protect architectural cultural heritage (遗产) .
The idea of digitizing ancient buildings dates back to the 1990s and the technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning the ancient buildings with lasers, building 3D models with hundreds of images, as well as measuring everything precisely, engineers can make a copy as “same” as the real one.
As computers and smartphones are popular, the digital copy has great practical value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics (遗迹) without touching them, which helps protect them. The virtual tour of Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province is a good example as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hannover World Expo. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics. Even if the original ones are damaged one day, people can still know what they were like and can build a replica (复制品) if desired.
Time is the biggest problem to architectural heritage. We will have better technologies, but the digital technology offers a practical way to preserve architectural cultural heritage at the moment.
Which of the following statement is true?
The original look of Notre Dame can be seen with the video game.
The damaged parts of Notre Dame have been repaired.
Only people in Paris felt pain for losing Notre Dame.
The big fire has damaged the whole Notre Dame.
What will engineers do to create a digital replica of the ancient buildings?
Scan the photos of the buildings.
Measure all the parts exactly.
Improve the technology needed.
Build 3D models of full size.
How does the author prove the digital copy has vital practical importance?
A. By comparison.
B. By listing data.
C. By giving examples.
D. By classification.
What’s the passage mainly about?
The value of digital replica.
The damage of Notre Dame.
Repairing the natural heritage with VR technology.
An alternative measure to protect architectural cultural heritage.
D
Next time you are struggling with the crossword, try putting the kettle on. Drinking a cup of tea can improve creativity, a study suggests.
Researchers gave participants either tea or water and then asked them to complete a word association game, which was used to measure a form of creativity known as convergent thinking (聚合思维).
In the game, the participants were given sets of words such as “same, tennis, head” and asked to find a meaningful link between them. After analyzing the results in a way that ruled out the potential effects of a person’s intelligence and language ability, the researchers found those who drank the tea performed significantly better in the word association game. The tea drinkers scored an average of 13.89 in the game compared with 12.94 for water drinkers.
The researchers said it was not clear why tea has this beneficial effect. Tea contains special components, which can improve attention, but the participants in the study drank only a small amount of tea — 90 ml, on average — and carried out the tests very soon after consuming it, meaning any effect would have been ignored. This result showed the tea drinking event itself — rather than the biological components of tea — played a positive role, the researchers said.
Previous research has found that people tend to associate tea drinking with a specific set of personality traits(特征), such as smart, creative, elegant, confident, and stable. It may be that when participants are stimulated (刺激) by tea, the mental representation of a tea drinker is also activated, and they unconsciously think that they should be smarter and more creative.
What did the participants have to do in the study?
Pair the words with each other.
Guess the meaning of the words.
Find a connection between the words.
D. Tell the differences among the words.
33. What helped a participant get a higher score by the researchers?
A. The participant’s intelligence.
B. The action of drinking tea itself.
C. The participant’s language ability.
D. The biological components of tea.
34. What can be inferred from the previous research?
A. Drinking tea makes people more active.
B. Drinking tea is popular among the youth.
C. People tend to drink tea more than before.
D. People drinking tea are often thought smart.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Drinking Tea Is Good for Health
B. Drinking Tea Is A Popular Trend
C. Drinking Tea Makes for Creativity
D. Drinking Tea Matters A Lot in Life

In recent years, with the rapid development of China’s economic and social construction, the development of education has reached a new level, but the regional education inequality 61 (attract) people’ s attention ever since.
In my opinion, there are three reasons 62 this phenomenon. The first is the unfair investment (投入). The investment in urban schools is much more than 63 in rural schools. The second is the inequality of educational resources. Some schools have advanced facilities (设施), 64 (provide) their students with a good learning environment. However, some schools only have basic ones. Finally, inequality is also reflected in the allocation of teachers. The teaching 65 (able) of teachers in developed areas is generally better, 66 most of the teachers in less developed areas are 67 (possible) less competent in their work.
So how to solve this problem? Firstly, increase investment in education to narrow regional differences. Secondly, the allocation of resources should 68 (reform), and the compulsory education can be allocated as 69 whole. (Text 1)
W: Could you tell me how I get to Dupont Station from here?
M: Certainly. Take the Beltway and get off at exit 40B. Half an hour is enough.
W: It’s closer than I thought. I thought it would take an hour. Thanks.
(Text 2)
W: Shall we sit here? It’s nice to look out of the window.
M: It might be a bit cold by the door. Let’s find a table in that corner.
W: OK. At least it’s quiet there.
(Text 3)
M: Where are you?
W: I’m still at the train station. I’ve just arrived.
M: Well, I can’t go to pick you up because people are arriving at the party. You’d better take a taxi instead of a bus. It takes less time.
W:OK源:学。科。网]
(Text 4)
W: This is delicious. Did you make it yourself? It is better than any juice I can have in a café.
M: Yes, I did. It’s very simple. It tastes much nicer with a cake. The most important thing is to use really fresh fruits.
(Text 5)
M: Can I still check out these books?
W: Sorry, you can’t check out after 5:00 p.m. But you can read them here and check them out tomorrow.
M: Thank you very much.
(Text 6)
W: Have you started your art classes yet?
M: Yeah, we’ve had four now with the new teacher. Every week we have 2 classes.
W: How’s that going?
M: Good actually. She’s very different from Mr. Jones. He always wanted us to do things his way, you know, use the same techniques, work in a particular range of colours. Mrs. Boyd is very different. She lets us do things our way, and then comes and helps us improve. It’s a good way of doing things. Then she shows us what well-known artists have done after we’ve done our own work … so we can compare ideas I suppose.
W: Great.
(Text 7)
W: Can you tell me which one of these files contains the sales figures? I need them for the meeting tomorrow afternoon.
M: Susan and David have them, but I recommend looking at Susan’s files. I heard she always comes out with a very good analysis of the figures.
W: Great, I’ll go with Susan’s then. Thanks for the help.
M: No problem. By the way, what time does the meeting start? I guess I’ll have to attend, too.
(Text 8)
W: Good afternoon. What can I do for you?
M: I am afraid that the rice cooker I have bought in your store doesn’t work well. I bought it two days ago. When I used it to cook this morning, lots of steam escaped from it, and the hot steam nearly burnt me.
W: Would you like to exchange it?
M: No, I would like to return it.
W: Let me check the sales record. Oh, you bought it onWednesday. Well, do you have a credit card? We will take down your number and return the money to you.
M: I’ve actually got one, but I don’t take it with me. Well, I’ll phone my wife and ask her about that.
(Text 9)
W: Where are you from, Corey?
M: I’m from Canada. I’ve just moved here.
W: Canada! Are you good at winter sports then?
M: Yeah, I love winter sports very much, such as skiing and snowboarding. I also like ice diving.
W: Wow! That sounds quite exciting!
M: Yeah. I’ve been doing that for 7 years, since I was 9. What do you do in your free time?
W: Well, swimming used to be my favorite hobby. But now I spend most of my spare time in the acting club I joined last year and I really love the theater — I really want to be an actress one day. Have you got any other hobbies?
M: Um, I guess I enjoy playing online computer games. I feel quite relaxed when playing the games and it helps me make new friends. How about you? Do you spend much time online?
W: Well, I’m not interested in computer games. I think it makes no sense spending time playing something with strangers. I prefer chatting face to face with my friends.
M: I like chatting with friends too.
W: Oh, it’s time for class. Our English teacher is coming. After class I’ll introduce you to some of my friends.
(Text 10)
M: Hello everyone. My name’s Sandy Duffy and I’m here to tell you about my job as a video game writer. I work with game developers and designers to think of good stories, and I write all the dialogue in the game by myself. When I was in secondary school, I never imagined that I would do this job! I played the violin and that was what I planned to do as my job. But I had an accident when I was playing basketball and hurt my hand, so I had to think of doing something else. My mother wanted me to be a journalist, but I didn’t think it was for me.
I didn’t know what to study at university. I was good at lots of science subjects, including Physics and Maths, but I also loved entertaining people and I was good at Art. In the end I went to a film school where I studied lighting, special effects, how to use a camera ... all that! It was there that I started to think about working in the video game industry.
People also ask me what I like best about being a video game writer. Well, the money is good and it’s quite exciting. Just last night, for example, I was at a big dinner where they were giving prizes for new games. But what I love most is the fact that I get on so well with everyone in the company. That’s what makes my job so much fun.
