After a tour of duty in Afghanistan, Benjamin Blume began to attend Sam Houston State University, USA. But he felt there was something missing. That all changed when Blume attended a study program abroad. With the help of the staff at the Office of International Programs and the Veterans Resource Center(退伍老兵资源中心), he was able to take seven study trips abroad, visiting 19 countries in just three years.
Blume’s first stop was Leipzig, Germany for a German language program in the summer of 2018. Later that summer, Blume visited Australia as part of the stars and galaxy(星系) course. “There was a major eclipse(日食) in Australia that summer and it was an amazing thing to see,” Blume said. “We also visited Wyoming after leaving Australia for the same course to see the sky.”
In the fall of 2018, Blume took off again this time visiting Bern, Switzerland for a business course. Blume returned for the 2019 spring term before his next adventure that summer in Tokyo for a month-long economics trip. “Tokyo was quite the experience and like nothing I had seen before,” Blume said. “I had never experienced so much culture and history as I did there.”
Blume went from Tokyo back to Germany, this time visiting Aachen for an economics program. After returning to the US and staying for a month, Blume travelled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates for a three-week marketing program. Finally, Blume took his seventh and last study abroad trip to Auckland, New Zealand. “New Zealand was probably my favorite place to visit because the landscape is so diverse.” Blume added, “One day we hiked a glacier, which I had never done before. I was in the seventh grade, and we had moved to New Jersey in November. By then, everyone already had had their own friends, and no one wanted to talk to a new girl. To make things worse, they put me in “Section L”. I found out later that everyone called Section L “Loserville”. It was sort of an open secret that it was the section for troublemakers and not-so-smart kids. When I found out, I wanted to scream. I had always been a good student and had amazing friends, and now everyone thought I was a loser!
I did text my friends in Illinois almost every night, especially my best friend, Ana. At first my friends wanted to hear all about it. But then some stopped texting back once I said something about how miserable I was. One night when I was texting with Ana, I complained about another friend who had just done that.
Ana’s texts came really fast for the next few minutes and they surprised me. She said that she was tired of hearing about how bad everything was in New Jersey, too. She said she did not want to hurt my feelings but that I needed to stop feeling so sorry for myself all the time. I had to try to make things better.
The next day, I thought a lot about what Ana had said. She was right.
I wish I could say that everything changed overnight after that, but it didn’t. I was still stuck in “Loserville”, and some people were still mean to me, even though I tried to just stay out of their way.
But what did change was me — I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends. I signed up to make sets for the school play. I met a lot of new people there, and suddenly I had friends to say hi to in the halls!
I still miss Illinois sometimes, but life in New Jersey isn’t so hard any more. Even though I couldn’t change my situation, I could change my attitude — and that made all the difference.
24. “Loserville” is a section for _____________.
A. newcomers B. good students C. class secrets D. failures
25. The writer complained all the time in the new environment because _____________.
A. Ana didn’t text back to her B. she was unfairly treated
C. her friends hurt her feelings D. she was a good student
26. What made a difference in changing the situation
A. The writer went back to Illinois.
B. The writer ended friendship with Ana.
C. The writer began to make friends with others.
D. The writer fought back with her classmates.
27. What may be the best title for the passage
A. Say Goodbye to “Loserville” B. An Incident at School
C. Lasting Friendship D. Unhappiness in “Loserville”
C
Recycling in general can be an effective way to reuse natural material resources. The U.S.’s high recycling rate of paper, 68 percent, has proved this point. But although some materials can be effectively recycled and safely made from recycled content, plastics cannot. Plastic recycling does not work and will never work.
The problem with recycling plastic lies not with the concept or process but with the material itself. There are thousands of different plastics, each with its own characteristics. When all include different chemicals that cannot be recycled together, making it impossible to sort the trillions of pieces of plastics into separate types for processing. What’s more, plastic recycling costs more than new plastic because collecting, sorting, transporting, and reprocessing plastic waste is very expensive.
Despite this obvious failure, the plastics industry has begun a decades-long campaign to keep the lie that the material is recyclable, which reminds the public of the tobacco industry’s efforts to tell smokers that filtered(过滤的) cigarettes are healthier than unfiltered cigarettes.
Traditional mechanical recycling, in which plastic waste is ground up and melted(熔化), has been around for many decades. Now the plastics industry is promoting the benefits of so-called chemical recycling, in which plastic waste is broken down using high heat and turned into a low-quality fossil fuel. In 2018, Dow Chemical claimed that the Renewlogy chemical-recycling factory in Salt Lake City was able to reprocess mixed plastic waste through the “Hefty EnergyBag” program and turn it into diesel fuel(柴油). As Reuters showed in a 2021 survey, however, the pyrolysis(高温分解) process was not worth it.
We’re not making a case for hopelessness. Just the opposite(相反的). We need the facts so that individuals and policymakers can take action. Proven solutions to the plastic-waste and pollution problems exist and can be quickly copied across the country. These solutions include placing bans on single-use plastic bags and unrecyclable single-use plastic food-service products, and installing dishwashing equipment in schools.
Consumers can put pressure on companies to stop filling store shelves with single-use plastics by not buying them and instead choosing reusables and products in better packaging. And we should all keep recycling our paper, boxes, cans, and glass, because that actually works.
28. What is the problem with recycled plastic ’
A. It can’t be stored in large numbers. B. It can hardly be selected out.
C. It is generally of poor quality. D. It costs too much to produce.
29. What is the plastics industry trying to do
A. To prove the possibility of recycling plastic.
B. To cut down the cost of cycling plastic.
C. To uncover the lie of the tobacco industry.
D. To compete with the tobacco industry.
30. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Traditional recycling proves to be safer.
B. Traditional recycling can deal with limited waste.
C. Chemical recycling can save energy resources.
D. Chemical recycling turns out to be a failure.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To show the difficulty in recycling plastic.
B. To introduce a new way of recycling plastic.
C. To call for a ban on single-use plastic products.
D. To stress the importance of recycling plastic.
D
In the past decade, the use of social media has grown in a way that no one could have guessed. It has turned some teenagers into celebrities(名人) and turned the famous into the infamous, overnight.
A key feature of social media, however, is its volatility. Trends come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared. So, what were the key social media trends of 2019
Short video apps such as TikTok and its Chinese equivalent Douyin, took the world by storm The Telegraph reported that Tik Tok was ranked 8th on Apple’s App Store in April. And Douyin had more than 300 million domestic monthly active users in June, CNBC said.
Why are these short videos — which are rarely longer than a few minutes — so popular Jiang Yige, a Singapore-based analyst at FengHe Fund Management, has a theory. “Short videos are just right to fill in the little gaps in our busy schedules,” he told CNBC.
These videos — apart from being very convenient — are important to teenagers because they allow them to express themselves, according to Teen Vogue.
The sense of community that users of short video apps get is another appealing feature. Liza Koshy, a user of the US app Musically who has over 2 million followers, said that she was thrilled when anyone said that her video had “inspired” him. “It’s really cool... because I think as short video creators that’s what we all expect,” she added.
Live streaming is another feature of our social media life that now seems as natural as sunrise. It’s a pretty neat idea: You can watch anyone, anywhere, live.
However, China has taken live streaming to a whole new level. In China, more than 100 million viewers monthly watch a live streaming video. Forbes thought that a number of factors had led to the popularity of live streaming. Among them is viewers’ ability to interact while remaining anonymous.
However, the boom in social media may be having side effects too. Fake news is one serious problem it arguably causes. Material shared on these platforms is often not checked for accuracy. The most basic content can be false and can sway users one way or another. We use social media all the time; that doesn’t mean that we understand the influence it is having on us. We should be mindful of both the time we spend on it and its impact on our minds.
32. The underlined word “volatility” in Paragraph 2 possibly means “being _____________”.
A. steady B. changeable C. promising D. violent
33. According to Liza Koshy, short videos are very popular because _____________.
A. they are very convenient B. they provide a sense of community
C. they help people kill time D. they allow people to express themselves
34. What can we learn about social media from the text
A. The information from social media is highly reliable.
B. When it comes to social media, people only know short videos.
C. There is still much room for social media to make improvement.
D. People can’t communicate with each other without social media.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Key Social Media Trends of 2019
B. Rapid Development of Social Media
C. Short Videos Taking the World by Storm
D. Live Streaming — the New Feature of Social Media

Is Fresh Air Really Good for You
We all grew up hearing people tell us to “go out and get some fresh air.” 36 According to recent studies, the answer is a big YES, if the air quality in your camping area is good.
37 If the air you’re breathing is clean — which it would be if you’re away from the smog of cities — then the air is filled with life-giving, energizing oxygen. If you exercise out of doors, your body will learn to breathe more deeply, allowing even more oxygen to get to your muscles(肌肉) and your brain.
Recently, people have begun studying the connection between the natural world and healing(治愈). 38 In these places patients can go to be near nature during their recovery. It turns out that just looking at green, growing things can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and put people into a better mood(情绪). Greenery is good for us. Hospital patients who see tree branches out their window are likely to recover at a faster rate than patients who see building or sky instead. 39 It gives us a great feeling of peace.
40 While the sun’s rays can age and harm our skin, they also give us beneficial Vitamin D. To make sure you get enough Vitamin D — but still protect your skin — put on sunscreen right as you head outside. It takes sunscreen about fifteen minutes to start working, and that’s plenty of time for your skin to absorb a day’s worth of Vitamin D.
A. Being in nature refreshes us. B. So what are you waiting for C. Fresh air cleans our lungs. D. Another side benefit of getting fresh air is sunlight. E. Just as importantly, we tend to associate fresh air with health care. F. But is fresh air really as good for you as your mother always said G. All across the country, recovery centers have begun building Healing Gardens.

When I was in Primary Five, I was in the basketball school team. Every month we would have a basketball match against another school’s basketball team. In spite of all the cheers we received from our classmates and the amount of training we had, we had never won a single match before. That was due to our lack of teamwork and cooperation.
During one of our training sessions, our school team was divided into two to have a match against each other. The inter-school competition was coming up and none of us wanted to miss our chance of getting that gold trophy(奖品). “Three, two, one, start!” our basketball coach, Coach Leong, shouted. John, who was in my team, managed to grab the ball that Coach Leong threw in the air. Since John grabbed the ball, he refused to let anyone, not even his teammates, take it.
“Pass the ball to me, John!” I shouted. I was in a good position to shoot the ball into the hoop(篮筺). To my shock, John made a rude face at me. I made an attempt to grab the ball from him. When I got my hands on the ball, it became a tug-of-war(激烈竞争) between John and me. Coach Leong shook his head and exploded like an active volcano. “Children! Is this the type of behavior that I should be seeing The match is in two weeks! Do you even know the importance of teamwork ” Coach Leong gave us a disappointed look. It seemed as if he had some sad news to tell us.
I was right.
Coach Leong explained that he would be retiring after the match. “I hope you can show me your teamwork and cooperate with one another in this match before I retire.” I choked on my tears. My heart sank. We were giving Coach Leong such a tough time, when all he wanted was for us to show teamwork in the match. After that day, my teammates and I were determined to do our best and work as a team.

第二节
On the day of the match, we stood face-to-face with our opponents, the team from River Primary School. Once again, Coach Leong reminded us to work as a team. The referee blew the whistle and flung the basketball into the air. I knew I had to give my team a head start, so I leaped up in the air to grab the ball. "John, catch!" I yelled at the top of my voice. John was short but he could run at lightning speed, and I think the other team assumed he was the last person I would pass the ball to. Before the opposing team could reach John, he had already shot the ball into the basketball hoop. Our team cheered with joy, and I punched the air twice with my fist.
John did a perfect overhead throw, and I caught the ball in mid-air. As the entire opposing team charged towards me, I kept my calm even though I was surrounded. I threw the ball over their heads. It flew through the air like a missile into the hands of Eric, who was standing right behind our opponents, next to the basketball hoop. Eric dunked the ball in. We won the match 5-0. Finally, we managed to work as a team and Coach Leong was very satisfied. Each of us received a trophy for our amazing efforts. As I recalled the match, I smiled as I looked at the trophy. I realized that the most important thing was not the trophy but the value of teamwork that I had learnt from that match.
