On the night before Christmas in 1818, an Austrian clergyman(牧师)and a music teacher sang a song that they wrote together for the first time. They did not know it then, but their song would become the world’s most famous Christmas song.
The song is called Silent Night.
Joseph Mohr was the clergyman. He first wrote words for a poem in 1816. Two years later, he asked his friend Franz Gruber, a teacher, to write music for the words. Gruber simply added some musical notes to the poem. He didn’t attach(寄予) much importance to the piece, nor did he expect it to be popular. On December 24 of that year, the two sang the song for the first time at a church in Austria. Gradually, people carried the song to the rest of Austria and across Europe. In 1859,the first English version of the song came out in New York, America. It became a very popular song.
The song also brought peace. On Christmas Eve of 1914, British soldiers(士兵) heard German soldiers sing the German version of Silent Night. So they replied by singing the English version of the song. On Christmas morning, the soldiers stopped fighting. It is the story of the World War Ⅰ Christmas Truce(休战).
