My mom could be quite a handful, which I have come to see as a blessing as the years have gone by but did not always appreciate when she was alive, especially after her Alzheimer's diagnosis.
The news came as no surprise to us kids, of course. We'd seen our tough, sharp-witted mom change. But Mom was not about to take Alzheimer's lying down. "There's nothing wrong with me!" she insisted, even after she sideswiped a cop, denied doing it and then blamed it all on him.
Eventually my brother and his wife moved Mom to a sweet little house on the property next to theirs so they could keep an eye on her. They built a lighted path between the two houses so Mom could visit when she wanted, which occasionally happened at 5:00 a.m. when she thought it was 5:00 p.m. At Christmas, my sister-in-law, Toni, would hang Christmas lights along the way.
One thing we couldn't do was make her eat properly, especially after she nearly burned the house down making tuna (金枪鱼) salad. So we arranged for a senior meals-on-wheels program to deliver her meals. At first she wouldn't let them in the house. "This is ridiculous," she said. I know how to eat!" Then she offered to help them deliver meals to "people who really need them".
Eventually she relented—except that she would simply keep all the meals in the fridge, untouched, in case she happened to have hungry visitors. When we told the volunteers this, they were wonderfully wise and pretty soon they got Mom to eat. She even admitted that the food was "pretty good, considering". We're convinced the good nutrition helped keep her in her home a little longer before she had to enter a care facility.
So how proud am I that our friends at Volunteers of America, which operates meals-on-wheels programs for the elderly all over the country Very proud. It was angels, after all, who were able to get my mother to eat.
24. What do we know about the author's mother
A. She troubled the family a lot B. She never suffered from Alzheimer.
C. She was a woman lacking intelligence. D. She was easy to get along with
25. How did the family help Mom
A. They lived together with her. B. They had her house beautifully decorated

Plastic pollution has long been a problem, but now it's gotten to a new height literally. Microplastic, referring to plastic fragments and particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter, have been found on Mount Qomolangma as high as 8,440 meters above sea level, just 408. 86 meters below the peak of the mountain, according to a recent study published in the journal One Earth.
"These are the highest microplastics ever discovered so far." lead author Imogen Napper from the University of Plymouth, UK, said in a statement. Scientists collected snow and water samples from 19 different locations from 4,200 meters above sea level all the way up to the summit of Mount Qomolangma. They found microplastics in all the water samples and part of the snow samples. The most polluted sample was from the Base Camp in Nepal, where most human activities on the mountain are concentrated. It had 79 particles of microplastics per liter of snow.
But how have these fragments made it all this way and in such a great abundance The answer is apparent human activities. It is climbers who bring plastic products to the mountain. Even if they don't litter, just walking for 20 minutes or opening a bottle of water can release microplastics into the environment.
The harsh fact is that plastic pollution has reached even the most remote places on Earth. Researchers even found a plastic bag at the deepest point in the world’ s oceans — in the Mariana Trench, located in the Pacific Ocean. The bag is the same as the ones commonly used in grocery stores. Even covered in ice, the Arctic is still a victim of plastic pollution. A 2020 report published in Nature suggests that there are 2,000 to 17,000 plastic particles per cubic meter in Arctic ice cores, and between 0 to 18 microplastic particles per cubic meter from the water beneath ice floes. Experts think microplastics may be transported by air and then reach the North Pole in snowfall.
"What we don’ t yet fully know is the potential problems these tiny pieces of plastic could be having to ecosystems, to organisms and even to our own health as well," said Christian Dunn of Bangor University, UK. Then what can we do "We need to start focusing on deeper technological solutions that focus on microplastics, like changing fabric design and including natural fibers instead of plastic when possible."
28. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about
A. The polluted samples from the peak were the most serious.
B. Plastic pollution has been discovered at high altitudes.
C. Humans have climbed to the peak of Mount Qomolangma.
D. Microplastics are a newly-found material by researchers.
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A. Microplastics may go far beyond the range of human activities.
B. The means of microplastics transportation has been confirmed.
C. There are frequent exchanges between Arctic ice cores and ice floes.
D. Bags from grocery stores are the main source of plastic pollution.
30. According to Christian Dunn, the key to addressing microplastic pollution is _______.
A.to prohibit the use of plastic products B. to diversify the design of microplastics
C. to apply only natural fibrous alternatives D. to develop more advanced technologies
31. Which of the following is the best title
A. Litter in the Mariana Trench B. New One Earth Campaigns
C. Pollution Reaches New Height D. Adventurous Human Activists
D
If you want to disturb the car industry, you'd better have a few billion dollars: Mom-and-pop carmakers are unlikely to beat the biggest car companies. But in agriculture, small farmers can get the best of the major players. By connecting directly with customers, and by responding quickly to changes in the markets as well as in the ecosystems, small farmers can keep one step ahead of the big guys. As the co-founder of the National Young Farmers Coalition (NYFC, 美国青年农会)and a family farmer myself. I have a front-row seat to the innovations among small farmers that are transforming the industry.
For example, take the Quick Cut Greens Harvester, a tool developed just a couple of years ago by a young farmer, Jonathan Dysinger, in Tennessee, with a small loan from a local Slow Money group. It enables small-scale farmers to harvest 175 pounds of green vegetables per hour — a huge improvement over harvesting just a few dozen pounds by hand — suddenly making it possible for the little guys to compete with large farms of California. Before the tool came out, small farmers couldn't touch the price per pound offered by California farms. But now, with the combination of a better price point and a generally fresher product, they can stay in business.
The sustainable success of small farmers, though, won't happen without fundamental changes to the industry. One crucial factor is secure access to petition from investors, developers, and established large farmers makes owning one's own land unobtainable for many new farmers. From 2004 to 2013, agricultural land values doubled, and they continue to rise in many regions.
Another challenge for more than a million of the most qualified farm workers and managers is a non-existent path to citizenship — the greatest barrier to building a farm of their own. With farmers over the age of 65 outnumbering farmers younger than 35 by six to one, and with two-thirds of the nation's farmland in need of a new farmer, we must clear the path for talented people willing to grow the nation's food.
There are solutions that could light a path toward a more sustainable and fair farm economy, but farmers can't clumsily put them together before us. We at the NYFC need broad support as we urge Congress to increase farmland conservation, as we push for immigration reform, and as we seek policies that will ensure the success of a diverse and ambitious next generation of farms from all backgrounds. With a new farm bill to be debated in Congress, consumers must take a stand with young farmers.
The author mentions car industry at the beginning of the passage to introduce .
A. the progress made in car industry B. a special feature of agriculture
C. a trend of development in agriculture D. the importance of investing in car industry
33. What does the author want to illustrate with the example in paragraph 2
A. Loans to small local farmers are necessary.
B. Technology is vital for agricultural development.
C. Competition between small and big farms is fierce
D. Small farmers may gain some advantages over big ones.
34. What is the difficulty for those new farmers
A. To gain more financial aid. B. To hire good farm managers.
C. To have farms of their own. D. To win old farmers' support.
35. What should farmers do for a more sustainable and fair farm economy
A. Seek support beyond NYFC B. Expand farmland conservation.
C. Become members of NYFC D. Invest more to improve technology.

Shoes are made for walking.
But Aamir, a homeless Indian boy, doubted it. Wandering the noisy railway platform, he found one of his flip-flops(人字拖鞋) broken again. He hurried to a corner, sat down and tried to fix it, his bare foot pressing awkwardly against the ground. However, it was beyond repair.
He gave up and looked around aimlessly, staring at people’ s shoes. Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to two boyish legs wearing flawlessly white socks and equally perfect black leather shoes, which were glittering in the mid-day sun. It was a boy of his age. He couldn’t treasure his possession too much, obviously, because every ten seconds, he stopped, bent down and carefully wiped a dust or two from his shoes. His father was constantly glancing over and urging him, “Hurry up! The train is coming!”
Aamir’ s eyes followed the father and son, but mostly the leather shoes, as if enchanted (被施魔法的). Imagining himself wearing them, the comfort from the good leather, jaw-dropping look on his friends’ faces, he couldn’t help cracking a big smile.
The bell of the train drew him back; the fancy-shoe boy and his father were about to get aboard. They tried to crowd into the doorway. However, the instant the boy entered the compartment(车厢), one of his shoes fell off and before he could pick it up, the train began to pull away.
The shoe was now lying alone on the platform. Aamir’s eyes lit up with excitement. Like an arrow, he shot for the shoe and then picked it up, holding it with both hands as if holding the Queen’s crown. After a few seconds of hesitating and looking from the shoe to the train and back, he began racing--with only one good shoe, his flip-flop.
He held the leather shoe up, trying to pass it to the boy through the window, who was desperately reaching out his hand as well. However, it was never close enough.

Dear Jenny,
Knowing that you are going to take part in a Chinese poetry recitation contest, I’ m writing to offer you some information about the poem to be presented.
Written by a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty, Meng Jiao, this poem mainly describes a scene where a mother is fully occupied in making clothes for her child who is about to leave home. By concentrating on this specific moment, the author vividly implies a mother’s deep love for her child by comparing it to the warm and selfless sun.
All the above is what I know about the widely-read classic, which I hope will help you in a way. Looking forward to your good news!
Yours,
Li Hua
作文(二)
That left Aamir no choice but to throw the shoe onto the train. With his eyes fixed on the window, Aamir put all his strength in his right hand and made a powerful throw. However, he abruptly fell off because of the broken flip-flop. Without a second thought, he tried again, the shoe just flew past the window frame and fell on the platform like a dead leaf. Seeing this, Aamir stamped his feet, wearing a frustrated look. “Are shoes really made for walking ”, Aamir thought with depression. He drooped his head, not knowing what to do next.
But when he raised his head, Aamir saw the other shoe thrown out of the window. Miraculously, it landed on the platform several steps away from him. Before he could look up again and seek out the fancy-shoe boy, the train sped on, vanishing in the distance. What remained in sight was the meandering rail track and the rolling mountains far away. Twenty years later, when he was launching his new footwear product at a press conference, wearing a pair of shining leather shoes, Aamir started his presentation with a simple sentence: “Shoes are made for walking.”
