Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home, according to the United Nations.
To remind people of the importance of water, the UN first set up World Water Day in 1993. It is held on March 22nd each year. And this year’s theme is “wastewater”.
According to the UN, wastewater problems make water shortages (短缺) even more serious. Most of the wastewater from our homes, cities, industry and agriculture flows directly back to nature. Instead of letting it pollute the environment, the industries need to treat it first.
China takes actions to deal with water problems too. From March 22nd to 28this the China Water Week, during which the Chinese government promotes (推广) the new policy of “river chiefs” to the public.
Just as every province, city and county (县) has a leader, every river will have a chief too. China passed the policy at the end of 2016 and carried it out nationwide in 2019. Local government heads will be river chiefs. They will be responsible for all rivers and lakes in their regions. All living things on the Earth need water to live. Yet humans are facing serious water problems. According to the United Nations, today over 663 million people live without a safe water supply close to home.
To remind people of the importance of water, the UN first set up World Water Day in 1993. It is on March 22 each year. From March 22 to 28 is also the China Water Week. The first year’s theme is “Waste water”. It tried to call on people to reuse waste water instead of wasting it.
In Australia people make good use of waste water. Most Australians have a grass lawn around their home instead of washing the car in the street. Many of them wash it on the lawn to keep the grass longer so that it covers the ground and reduce evaporation(蒸发).
Rainwater may seem useless to you. But you can also reuse it. People in Germany collect rainwater to wash their toilets. Most houses in the country that are built in the last few years have rainwater collection devices (设备). Rainwater is collected from the root, and then linked to the toilet. But if you don’t have the device just put a bucket(桶) under your roof when it rains.
Water makes up 71 percent of the. Earth’s surface. But we can only use a very small part of it. Only about 3 percent of the world’s. water is fresh water. It’s in lakes, rivers and underground.
Over 80 percent of the waste water in the world goes back into the nature. It has not been cleaned and pollutes the rivers and lakes. Unsafe water makes around 842 ,000 people die each year.
By 2030, about half of the world’s population could be facing water problem. By 2050, as many as seven billion people across the world could not have enough water supplies. The world’s population might be 9. 3 billion by then.

The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty. It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the Earth is covered with water while we say we are short of (短缺)water. Why Because about 97% of water on the Earth is sea water which we can't drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only drink and use the 3%-the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can't even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted.
Now more water is needed. The problem is Can we avoid (避免)a serious water shortage later on First, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it. Even if(即使)every large city reused its water, there would not be enough. What can people turn to next
The seas seem to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the seas. All that needs to be done is get the salt out of the sea water. No matter who we are, where we are, or what we do, we cannot live without water. It is the source of all life and we need it every day. But in truth we’re facing serious water problems.
Although water covers 71 percent of the earth’s surface, we can only use a very small amount of it. Only about 3 percent of the world’s water is fresh water. It’s in lakes, rivers and underground.
They need to make sure that industries treat the wastewater before it goes into nature. They also need to clean up the polluted waters, like the blue algae (蓝藻) pollution in Taihu Lake, Jiangsu.
36. From the second paragraph, we know that ________.
A. waste water problems make water shortage even more serious
B. fresh water can be found in lots of places like lakes, rivers and underground
C. people can live without water for a long time
D. there’s much water on the earth so we can use as much as we want
37. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “source”

38. ________ is set up to remind people of the importance of water.
A. World Oceans Day B. World Health Day
C. World Environmental Day D. World Water Day
39. Which of the following is true according to the passage
A. Most of the wastewater flows directly back to nature.
B. Wastewater flows directly to our homes.
C. The policy “river chiefs” was carried out nationwide before 2016.
D. Industries have done something to treat the wastewater before it goes into nature.
40. We can find this passage from ________.
A. a novel B. a newspaper C. a travel guide D. a fashion magazine
D
