第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
As many as 10 of the 17 kinds of penguins may be in danger of disappearing. The number of penguins has decreased by 30% since 1987.
Penguins are black and white birds that live in the southern part of the world. They are common in South America, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Many live near cold waters. But some live near warm waters in Galapagos Islands. Penguins cannot fly, but they are fine swimmers. Penguins eat fish and krill(磷虾). The warming of the earth is the reason for the decrease in the number of penguins. The heating of the air has caused ocean waters to become warmer. Higher water temperatures have reduced the supply of fish and krill. Some years later these birds are completely unable to reproduce(繁殖). Besides, many adult penguins die of hunger.
Widespread(广泛的)fishing, exploration for oil and oil leaks(漏)also make penguins in danger. Poisonous things in ocean waters are another danger. Penguins also have their enemies, including wild dogs, sharks, seals and sea lions.
News about penguins is not all bad, however. Several years ago, oil leaking from a ship hurt 40% of the penguins in South Africa. The penguins became covered with oil. But thousands of people helped clean and treat the birds well. Then they returned the penguins to the wild. Now these South African penguins are reproducing in higher numbers than before the oil leaking.

B. Ocean waters are polluted
C. The decrease in the number of penguins
D. Ocean is important for penguins
B
Osedax worms have been found in oceans all over the world. They’ve only ever been spotted on bones, which makes some scientists think that the bone-eaters are specialized to live in odd ecosystems, such as whale falls. “Those kinds of animals are definitely uniquely adapted to the environment in which you find them,”says marine biologist River Dixon. She is a graduate student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
But as recent experiments show, the bone-eaters may not be picky about what type of bones they devour(吞食). Last year, biologists spotted Osedax worms in the Gulf of Mexico for the first time. And not on whale bones. Dixon was part of a research team that made the discovery. In early 2019, her group put the dead bodies of three alligators(短吻鳄)in water about 2 kilometers deep. Over the next few months, they sent a remote-controlled vehicle a few times to spy on what were essentially “alligator falls”.
51 days after the alligators were placed in the seawater, scientists revisited. “The flesh was gone”, Dixon says. . “It had been reduced to just the skeleton(骨骼).” And just as at whale falls, it hosted a carpet of bone-eating Osedax worms. These worms were similar to other bone-eaters but represented a never-before observed species. That means the scientists who found them get to name it (although Dixon says they haven’t settled on a name yet).
The lab where Dixon works studies food systems in the deep ocean. Algae and plants use photosynthesis(光合作用)to turn sunlight into food. Animals eat those plants and algae to survive. Then larger animals may eat those animals. But sunlight doesn’t reach the deep ocean’s bottom. So other pathways are essential. These pathways include whale falls and other dead bodies. The scientists wondered how alligator falls fit into a larger food web. To find out, they submerged them.
Studying alligator falls, Dixon says, could help show how life evolved(进化)in the deep sea. It’s possible that the creatures found on whale falls and other falls today, Dixon says, evolved from creatures that hundreds of millions of years ago would have devoured plesiosaur (蛇颈龙) falls.
4.What do we know about Osedax worms
A. They depend on bones for survival. B. They are newly evolved creatures.
C. They are used to clean the ocean. D. They prefer to live with whale falls.
5.Why were the dead bodies of three alligators handled that way
A. To analyze the ocean food chain.
B. To observe how deep they would fall.
C. To research on the structure of alligators.
D. To learn what would feed on their bones.
6.What does the underlined word “submerged” in the last but one paragraph mean
A. Considered. B. Required. C. Sank. D. Buried.
7.What does Dixon stress in the end
A. The pressure on creatures to have food.
B. The importance of studying falls in the ocean.
C. The consequence of consuming plesiosaur falls.
D. The influence of plesiosaur falls on the ecosystem.
C
Scientists who played hide-and-seek with rats found that their furry (毛茸茸的) subjects seemed to love the game and they were remarkably good at it.
The researchers taught six adolescent male rats how to play a one-on-one version of hide-and-seek. They equipped a large room with cardboard barriers and small containers to serve as hiding places for humans and rats respectively. The game started when the rat was placed in a small box in the middle of the room. If the rat was the “seeker”, the scientist would hide and then remotely open the box. If the rat was the “hider“, the scientist would crouch by the box when the rat came out. This led the little creature to run quickly for cover. All six rats learned how to be the seeker. Five of them were able to handle hiding as well.
Compared with something like playful wrestling, hide-and-seek is more complex for several reasons. It requires an understanding of the rules, a clear grasp of players’ distinct roles and the ability to assume different roles on different rounds. This untraditional experiment throws light on the sophisticated sense of play in these tiny creatures, and also hints at the evolutionary usefulness of this type of play.
Peggy Mason, a neurobiologist at the University of Chicago, said that she was most impressed by the discovery that the rats didn’t just learn hide and seek — they wanted to play it. “Play probably helps young animals learn how to socially interact,” Mason said. She pointed to the evidence that when the rats are prevented from playing during early development, they don’t grow into normal adults. Instead, they become anxious, they don’t play well with others and they don’t make great parents.
8.What can we learn about the rats playing hide-and-seek
A. They found much pleasure in hide-and-seek.
B. They were better than any other animal in hide-and-seek.
C. They enjoyed hide-and-seek much more than other games.
D. They had greater difficulty in learning to seek.
9.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “sophisticated” in paragraph 3
A. Unimportant B. Permanent. C. Complicated. D. Imaginary.
10.Why is playful wresting mentioned in the text
A. To indicate that hide-and-seek is much easier.
B. To indicate that hide-and-seek is more fascinating.
C. To indicate that hide-and-seek is more adventurous.
D. To indicate that hide-and-seek is more challenging.
11.What can we learn from the text
A. Evolution brings the rats the ability to play.
B. Rats are born with the ability to play socially.
C. Hide-and-seek helps rats improve their social ability.
D. Adult rats tend to play more often than young ones.
D
It is well known that rhinos (犀牛) have poor eyesight, so they mostly rely on their noses to understand the world around them. But there’s one interaction in which sound plays a key role. Southern white rhino males can either be dominant (支配地位的) or subordinate. And only the dominant males hold and defend territories. New search finds that they can distinguish the calls of other males to know who is who.
“We found that contact calls carry information about the dominance status of the males. It means that only by listening to the calls, you can say if the male is territorial or subordinate.” Ivana Cinkoval, a zoologist at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
She and her team spent almost two years in South Africa’s Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park recording the social contact calls of male rhinos. Then they played those calls back to dominant territorial males and watched the responses.
The researchers asked that the rhino calls not be included in this program due to the concern that calls might be used for illegal hunting. Back to the reactions of the rhinos.
“They started to search for the unexpected visitor the most quickly and spent the longest time searching around for the unwelcome visitor after the playback of the subordinate call, which was quite surprising.”
Only territorial male rhinos hold breeding (交配繁育) opportunities with the female rhinos. Subordinate males could thus be interested in challenging the territorial male for dominance. But dominant males rarely lose their territories to subordinate males, at least while they’re in prime condition.
12.What do dominant males rely on to identify others
A. Sense of hearing. B. Sense of touch.
C. Sense of sight. D. Sense of smell.
13.Why didn’t researchers allow recorded calls to be included in the program
A. To protect their intellectual property rights.
B. To keep people from being frightened by them.
C. To prevent them from being used for hunting rhinos.
D. To cover up the fact of illegal hunting in rhinos.
14.How did dominant males react to the subordinate call
A. They started to search for a hiding place.
B. They sought for the comer quickly and carefully.
C. They ran away from the unexpected visitors.
D. They looked around with great alarm.
15.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Territorial males’ dominance is generally stable.
B. Dominance males’ position is challenging.
C. Subordinate males are aggressive.
D. Subordinate males have breeding opportunities.

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What's worse, he found that he only had one dime(十分钱) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house.
Hesitantly he knocked at door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. "What can I do for you " asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while "Would you please give me some...a drink of water " the boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you " "You don't owe me anything," she replied with a warm smile on her face. "My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness." Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.
Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she car me from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.
