Dr. Nancy Roman, born in 1925, who was celebrated as a pioneer for female scientists and had advanced the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, died on Dec 25, 2018.
When Nancy Roman asked for permission to take a second algebra (代数) course in high school, a teacher demanded to know “what lady would take mathematics instead of Latin”. In college, a professor admitted that he often tried to prevent women from majoring in physics but Nancy stuck to it. And after receiving Doctor’s degree in astronomy, she found a professional home at NASA In 1959, Dr. Roman became the first chief of astronomy at NASA. headquarters, a role that made her one of the agency’s first female leaders.
Dr. Roman spent much of her career helping develop, fund and promote technology that would help scientists see more clearly beyond Earths atmosphere. But her most well-known work was perhaps leading to design the Hubble Space Telescope the first major telescope to be sent into space for the purpose of gathering photographs and data from the universe. She was, therefore, named as “the mother of Hubble”.
“She made it possible to get the early telescope up into space to learn what needed to be learned,” said science historian Bob Zimmerman: and her hard-nosed nature helped get the telescope built.
The telescope did not launch until 1990, a little more than a decade after Dr Roman retired, “but when it did, its photographs of the universe thrilled the world. I am glad,” she once told Science, “I ignored the people who told me that I could not be an astronomer.”
29. What can we conclude from the teacher’s reaction to Nancy Roman’s application for taking a second algebra course
A. The teacher doubted it. B. The teacher didn’t care about it.
C. The teacher accepted it at once. D. The teacher was strongly against it.
30. What was the most famous achievement of Nancy Roman’s work
A. She was one of the founders of NASA.
B. She proved the black hole really existed.
C. She was the first female astronomer in the world.
D. She led to design the Hubble Space Telescope.
31. When did Dr. Nancy Roman probably retire
A. In 1969. B. In 1979. C. In 1990. D. In 2000.
32. Which of the following is the best title of the passage
A. The Hubble Space Telescope B. Nothing can stop a determined heart.
C. Nancy Roman—the mother of Hubble D. Nancy Roman and NASA

The Tokyo Summer Olympics is going green. The 5,000 medals Japan has made are more special than most.
One novel focus of the Tokyo Olympics is to be “sustainable”— to avoid using too many natural resources, so that the games are easy on the environment. As part of this goal, the organizers decided to make all of the Olympic medals out of metal recycled from old electronics.
Almost all electronics are made with small amounts of “precious metals”, like gold and silver. But collecting enough of these metals to make 5,000 medals was a huge challenge. That’s because the amount of metal in each device is tiny. It would take about 20,000 cell phones to get just 1 kilogram of gold.
Beginning in April 2017, the organizers placed collection boxes around the country, and asked people to turn in their old electronic devices. Soon people began to respond to the initiative, turning in smartphones, digital cameras, hand-held games, and laptops. At first, collection went slowly, but soon more and more areas began to take part. By the end, 1,621 local governments had helped out with the collection process.
Then came the job of breaking those devices down into smaller pieces. After being taken apart and sorted, the small electronics were smelted (熔炼) to get all the gold, silver, and bronze elements. This is a tricky job, which calls for careful attention and good skill. It’s also dangerous, because some of the metals and other things aren’t safe for people to touch or breathe.
By the end of March, 2019, the organizers had hit their targets of getting enough metal for the medals. They had collected around 32 kilograms of gold, 4,100 kilograms of silver and 2,200 kilograms of bronze. And now all the 5,000 medals are available for the would-be winners.
pared with other Olympic games, which word best describes the Tokyo Olympics medals
A. valuable. B. quality. C. unique. D. green.
34. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us
A. The difficulty of making the medals.
B. The process of collecting old electronics.
C. The purpose to recycle used smartphones.
D. The classification of the collected devices.
35. The underlined word “tricky” in Paragraph 5 means “________”.
A. creative B. well-paid
C. demanding D. unique
36. What’s the purpose of Tokyo’s way of making the medals
A. To advocate (提倡) sustainable use of resources.
B. To promote the spirit of Olympic Games.
C. To introduce a new technique to make medals.
D. To call people’s attention to environmental damage.
D 34. B 35. C 36. A

D
What is art That's an easy question to answer. Art is a painting, a drawing or a sculpture. Now there are new items to add to the list. Art is a dead shark in a glass case. Art is an unmade bed. Art is a video of a group of people standing completely still for sixty minutes.
A new group of young artists began to produce work that challenged the accepted idea of what art is and the role the artist should play in society. This group came to be known as the YBAs—the Young British Artists. The art of the YBAs does not just stick to painting and sculpture. It uses all kinds of different materials to express the feeling of the artist.
Damien Hirst is the most famous of the YBAs. The shark in the box is his work and is meant to express his own fear of dying. The shark stands for death. Right now, it is harmless. But eventually it will come for you. There is nothing to be done about it.
Traditionally artists have a message. They use their skills to lead us to enlightenment (启迪). The message of the YBAs is that they cannot do this. They are just as mixed up and confused as everybody else. A journalist once asked Damien Hirst what his next idea was for an artwork. “I don't know what I'm going to do next. I never know what I'm going to do next,” he replied.
Another YBA, Tracy Emin recently produced a work called “Bed”. This is just her own bed with the sheets disarranged and dirty. And the message “Look at me—I'm a mess.”
Some artists work with the public in producing their work. Gillian Wearing filmed a group of people dressed as policemen trying to keep still for 60 minutes while standing on top of a table. At the end of that time, the table falls apart and everyone falls to the floor. You can try to be a good citizen and a respectable member of the community. But don't try too hard or the pressure will be too much.
Art mirrors the state of society. In the work of the YBAs we can see a society on the threshold (开端) of the future—a bit worried, a bit excited and wondering what is going to happen next. The YBAs can't guide us, but they can make the journey more interesting.
37. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. The shark. B. Death.
C. Damien's artwork. D. Damien's fear of dying.
38. What can be inferred from Tracy's work “Bed”?
A. She needs to be taken care of.
B. She sees the world as a dirty one.
C. She compares herself to the bed.
D. She hopes for better living conditions.
39. Which of the following refers to a person who tries too hard in Gillian's work
A. The table.
B. The floor.
C. 60 minutes.
D. The people dressed as policemen.
40. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To explain what the work of the YBAs is like.
B. To show how the YBAs form ideas for their work.
C. To describe the YBAs as artists full of imagination.
D. To show the YBAs have made a great difference in art.
B 38. C 39. A 40. A
根据上文“The shark in the box is his work and is meant to express his own fear of dying. The shark stands for death.(《盒子里的鲨鱼》是他的作品,是为了表达他对死亡的恐惧。鲨鱼代表死亡)”和下文“But eventually it will come for you. There is nothing to be done about it.(但最终它会为你而来。对此我们束手无策)”可推知,it指代上文中提到的“death”。故选B。
【38题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段“This is just her own bed with the sheets disarranged and dirty. And the message “Look at me—I'm a mess.” (这只是她自己的床,床单又乱又脏。那信息呢 “看看我,我一团糟。”)”可推知,Tracy是将自己比作她的床。故选C。
【39题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“Gillian Wearing filmed a group of people dressed as policemen trying to keep still for 60 minutes while standing on top of a table. At the end of that time, the table falls apart and everyone falls to the floor. You can try to be a good citizen and a respectable member of the community. But don't try too hard or the pressure will be too much.(吉莉安·韦林拍摄了一群人装扮成警察站在桌子上保持静止60分钟的视频。在这段时间结束时,桌子散了,所有人都倒在了地板上。你可以努力成为一个好公民,一个受人尊敬的社区成员。但是不要太努力,否则压力会太大)”可知,在Gillian的作品中,站在桌子上的人 (a group of people dressed as policemen) 和所站的时间 (60 minutes) 表示压力 ( pressure),桌子则为压力的承受者。由于承受的压力太大,时间过长,桌子最终倒塌。故选A。
根据文章第二段“A new group of young artists began to produce work that challenged the accepted idea of what art is and the role the artist should play in society. This group came to be known as the YBAs—the Young British Artists.(一群新的年轻艺术家开始创作作品,挑战了人们对艺术是什么以及艺术家在社会中应该扮演的角色的公认观念。这个团体后来被称为YBAs——英国青年艺术家)”以及下文中的例子可知,本文通过三个实例,主要介绍YBAs的作品是什么样的。故选A。

如表示转折关系的but,though, however 等。

34. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us
A. The difficulty of making the medals.
B. The process of collecting old electronics.

D. The classification of the collected devices.
35. The underlined word “tricky” in Paragraph 5 means “________”.
A. creative B. well-paid
C. demanding D. unique
36. What’s the purpose of Tokyo’s way of making the medals
A To advocate (提倡) sustainable use of resources.
B. To promote the spirit of Olympic Games.
C. To introduce a new technique to make medals.
D. To call people’s attention to environmental damage.
Traditionally, artists have a message.
40 What is the main purpose of the text
A. To explain what the work of the YBAs is like.
B. To show how the YBAs form ideas for their work.
C. To describe the YBAs as artists full of imagination.
D. To show the YBAs have made a great difference in art.
