Leo was a small and thin boy living in a small village. Some boys in the village often bullied him and Leo was afraid.
One day, an old wizard went by the village and saw Leo being bullied. So when the bad boys left, he gave Leo a lion’s tail. “It’s a magic tail.” the wizard said, “When someone wears it and acts bravely, he or she will turn into a strong lion.” Leo hung the lion’s tail behind his body and decided to teach the bad boys a lesson.
But when the boys came, Leo was afraid and tried to run away. Yet they caught him. Suddenly, Leo showed the tail and remembered what the wizard had said. He became brave. He looked them in the eyes and said he would make them regret doing that. Leo felt the goose bumps (鸡皮疙瘩) all over his body . “This means that I am turning into a lion.” he thought. The boys ran away in fear. Leo wanted to catch them but he found his legs were as short as before.
When the wizard saw it, he came to Leo. Leo was very happy, though a little disappointed because his lion body had lasted only a short time.
“You are great.” said the wizard, “But have you ever seen a lion fighting No one fights with lions because they know how brave and strong lions are.” Yes. Leo had never seen a lion fighting. Perhaps the only test score that I remember is the 55 when I was in high school. The test was the last one of the term. “But Mum, I had the highest score in the class, “ I said proudly. “You failed, Dave!” my mother replied. “But it’s the highest!” I insisted(坚持). “I don’t care what scores others had, but you failed. The important thing is what you do!” my mother said in a strong way.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to make money for my schooling.
One day, my mother was sewing(缝) a quilt. I silently sat beside her. “Mum, is there love between you and Dad ” I asked her in a very low voice. With surprise in her eyes, she stopped her work for a while. Then she said, “Susan, look at this thread. It can hardly be seen, but it is really there. It makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, love should be a thread. Love is in-side.
I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. After they were back, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road every day. They were so kind to each other and it seemed they were the happiest couple.
After two months, my father still couldn’t walk by himself. “Dad, how are you feeling now ” I asked him one day.” Susan, don’t worry about me,” he said. “I just like walking with your mum. Red envelopes (hongbao in Chinese) are a popular gift people give during important festivals and celebrations in China. The red colour means good luck and happiness.
It’s not completely clear where this tradition comes from. But it might be connected with an old story about lucky money, which is also called yasuigian in Chinese. In ancient times, there was a terrible monster called Sui(祟). This monster was totally black except for its white hands. Every year on Chinese New Year’s Eve, it would come to touch a sleeping child’s forehead three times. Then the child would get a headache and fever and finally become a fool. In order to keep their children safe from being harmed by Sui, parents would keep their lights on and stay up the whole night, which was called “waiting for Sui”.
One New Year’s Eve, in Jiaxing, there was an old couple fearing that Sui would come to harm their son. So, the child was given eight coins to play with to keep him awake. The child wrapped(包裹)the coins in red paper, and then he played with the packet until he was so tired that he fell asleep. As red is considered to have the ability to protect against evil in Chinese tradition, the couple placed the packet with eight coins under their son’s pillow(枕头). When everybody had fallen asleep, Sui appeared and walked towards the child’s bed. But when the monster tried to touch his forehead, the eight coins gave off a strong light from the red packet, which scared it away. This story spread rapidly through their village, and from then on, giving red envelopes became a way to keep children safe and bring good luck.
Now, grandparents and parents gift their grandchildren and children red envelopes, wishing them good luck in the new year. Sometimes, the lucky money is also given to the elderly to wish them longevity(长寿)and health.

①Otters (水猴) are cute water animals. Recently, there has been a trend (趋势) of keeping them as pets. In Japan, some “otter cafes” are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take “funny” videos. These photos and videos posted online have attracted more people to buy otters as pets.
②However, these photos and videos mask the fact that the online trade is doing harm to otters. In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70 percent of otters sold online are under a year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers. When they’re kept as pets by humans, they do not live full, natural lives.
③Otters are very social (群居的). They live in family groups of up to fifteen in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners’ bathtubs (浴缸) or pools are much smaller than the bodies of water in the wild.
④On the other hand, it is not wise to keep otters as pets at home. They have a very special fishy smell. If they’re kept indoors, they will leave a lot of droppings around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are upset, they will make loud noises and even attack (攻击) people. If a person is bitten by an otter, he or she needs to go to the hospital immediately.
⑤So, what can we do to stop the otter pet trade Well, one of the main ways is to let more people know that otters should not be kept as pets. We should also keep an eye on online posts about these animals. When photos and videos show baby otters being kept or sold as pets, don’t share them.
48.People like to keep otters as pets because they are ________.
A.lonely B.cute C.friendly D.quiet
49.The underlined word “mask” has the closest meaning to ________.
A.show B.protect C.hide D.change
50.Because of the online pet trade, otters ________.

51.What does Paragraph ④ mainly tell us
A.Otters don’t make good pets. B.Otters are dangerous to people.
C.Otters may live a hard life as pets. D.Otters often make a mess in the room.
52.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.To stop people from keeping pets at home.
B.To introduce the ways of protecting pet otters.
C.To show the facts of the online otter pet trade.
