In the 17th century, the Netherlands experienced a period of artistic prosperity known as the Dutch Golden Age. During this period, artists found inspiration in Northern Renaissance painting techniques, contributing to masterpieces like Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. Known as the "Mona Lisa of the North", this painting represents the best of Dutch art and it has become one of the most beloved paintings in art history.
Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer is famous for his paintings of contemporary Delft, a city in Holland where the artist was born, lived and died. Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer’s most well-known work of art. However, it did not attain international fame at its time of completion. That came about at the end of the 20th century, when it was featured in a special exhibition in Washington, D.C.
Girl with a Pearl Earring does not show a specific person. Instead, it shows an unknown girl dressed in grand clothing, who is "like a vision coming from the darkness" and "belongs to no specific time or place", art historian Arthur K. Wheelock explained.
Vermeer is known for his ability to create shapes and forms using light rather than lines. This characteristic approach is particularly evident in Girl with a Pearl Earring. First, he would "invent", or create an initial drawing on the canvas. Then, he made a single colored underpainting(底层色). Next, he added color. And, finally, in order to make the piece extraordinarily bright, he would apply a thin layer of glaze(釉) to certain parts of the painting.
In addition to its fascinating context and appealing beauty, the piece is celebrated for the mystery that surrounds it. "When you think about Mona Lisa, she is also looking at us, but she isn’t engaging — she’s sitting back in the painting, self-contained," Tracy Chevalier, the author of The New York Times’ best-selling historical novel, Girl with a Pearl Earring, points out. "While the girl with a pearl earring in the painting is right there — there is nothing between her and us. She has this magical quality of being incredibly open and yet mysterious at the same time — and that is what makes her so appealing."
24.What inspired the creation of Girl with a Pearl Earring
A. The appearance of the girl.
B. Vermeer’s international fame.
C. Previous artists’ painting skills.
D. Encouragement from other artists.

A primary school constructed in 1935 in Shanghai has been lifted off the ground completely and relocated by using new technology called the "walking machine". The project marks the first time this "walking machine" method has been used in Shanghai to relocate a historic building.
Urbanization (城市化) has continued to significantly threaten architectural heritage. In Beijing, for instance, more than 1,000 acres of its historic hutongs and traditional courtyards were destroyed between 1990 and 2010.
In the early 2000s, due to the critics’ protest against the loss of old neighborhoods, cities including Nanjing and Beijing drew up long-term plans to preserve what was left of their historic sites, with protections introduced to safeguard buildings and set limits for developers. These protection efforts took different forms. In Beijing, a near-ruined building was transformed into a restaurant and gallery, while in Nanjing, a cinema from the 1930s was restored to its original condition, with some parts of it changed for modern use. In 2019, Shanghai welcomed Tank Shanghai, an arts center built in renovated oil tanks.
"Relocation is not the first choice, but better than destroying them," said Lan, the Shanghai primary school’s project supervisor. He also added, "Building relocation is a workable option. The central government is putting more emphasis on the protection of historic buildings. I’m happy to see that progress in recent years."
Shanghai has been generally acknowledged as China’s most active city when it comes to heritage preservation. The survival of a number of 1930s buildings and 19th-century stone gatehouses has offered distinct examples of how to give old buildings new life.
"We have to preserve the historic building, no matter what," Lan said. "The relocation has challenges, but in general, it is cheaper than destroying it and then rebuilding something in a new location.”
28.How did cities respond to the loss of historic sites
A. They criticized the developers.
B. They rebuilt the historic hutongs.
C. They proposed the protection project.
D. They transformed them into restaurants.
29.What does the author intend to do in Para.5
A. Introduce different opinions on building relocation.
B. Summarize the main idea of the previous paragraphs.
C. Add some background information about heritage preservation.
D. Provide strong evidence for the success in protecting old buildings.
30.What is Lan’s attitude towards relocating historic buildings
A. Indifferent. B. Favorable.
C. Opposed. D. Skeptical.
31.What is the passage mainly about
A. New preservation campaigns are launched in China.
B. New technology gives new life to historic buildings.
C. A building in Shanghai "walks" to a new location.
D. “Walking machine” makes heritage protection simpler.

A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost If you answer 10 cents, you’re not alone — most people give the same answer (the correct answer is 5 cents).
It’s an example of how we often rely on intuitive(直觉的)responses — answers we feel are true. "People give answers that pop into their mind," says Steven Sloman . We don’t spend much time "reflecting and checking whether the answer is right or wrong".
The bat and ball question helps explain why we often believe in fake news. "It is part of human nature to believe," says Sloman . But "the trick with fake news is to know to verify it" — in other words, to stop and question what you know. In one experiment, Sloman and a colleague made a discovery called helium rain. They told a group of volunteers about it, but admitted they could not fully explain what it was. They then asked the volunteers to rate their own understanding of helium rain. Most volunteers rated themselves 1 out of 7, meaning they did not understand the concept.
The researchers then told another group of volunteers about the discovery. This time, they said that scientists could fully explain how it worked. When asked to rate their understanding, the volunteers gave an average answer of 2. "The scientists’ confidence gave the volunteers an increased sense of their own understanding," Sloman says.
According to Sloman, studies show that knowledge spreads like a contagion(接触性传染病). This idea can be seen in many fields, including politics. "If everyone around you is saying they understand why a politician is dishonest," Sloman says, "then you’re going to start thinking that you understand, too." "Another explanation for the spread of fake news is motivated reasoning," writes Adam Wyatz , an American management professor. "We are naturally more likely to believe things that confirm our existing opinions."
So, in a world where misleading information is common, training people to care about fact-checking is important, especially in online communities. "We should check things and not just take them at face value," Sloman says. "Verify them before you believe."
32.Why does the author use the example of the bat and ball question
A. To arouse people’s interest in playing guessing games.
B. To show that there are various answers to a question.
C. To illustrate that people tend to rush to a conclusion.
D. To warn that people often ignore skills that they learned.
33.What does the underlined word "verify" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. To make sure something is true.
B. To follow your intuitive response.
C. To express an opinion about something.
D. To think about something for a long time.
34.When did volunteers claim to understand helium rain better
A. When they had more confidence in themselves.
B. When they believed that scientists understood it.
C. When some of the researchers explained it to them.
D. When Sloman and his colleague showed them how it worked.
35.Which of the following is an example of "motivated reasoning"
A. You search online for more information about a doubtful story on social media.
B. You trust a damaging story about someone who you always judge negatively.
C. You think a university professor dishonest when everybody around you says so.
D. You post a message online that shows your personal opinion about a news story.

When Lisa was a little girl, she learned an important lesson from her father. Her father told her that when she faced a problem, she should never give up, and instead she should try another solution. In the following years, Lisa always remembered her father’s words.
When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer after growing up. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road. After graduating from college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn’t give up. One day, at a friend’s party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted (针织的) sweater. It wasn’t a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches (编织法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself after talking with her for a while. The lady said it was a work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea. "Why not own a fashion store of my own That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes," she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweater. Later Lisa’s friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. The following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
Lisa was very nervous but she was lucky. Not long after the party began, her sweater drew the attention of a store owner from New York. She wanted to order forty such sweaters in two weeks. Lisa was really happy and accepted the order.

end up doing sth.
故填was chosen。
61.of 考查介词。冰墩墩的名字由两个独特的字组成。consist of意为"由……组成"。故填of。
